Ambassador Profile

Hello Future Vols!

My name is Alaina Washington and I am from Chattanooga, TN! I’m a junior majoring in industrial engineering with an honors concentration and minoring in reliability and maintainability engineering. I developed my love of industrial engineering after attending the TN Governor’s School for the Sciences and Engineering. I took a one month introductory course to this major and instantly knew that it was an excellent fit for me. This major is so versatile and provides career opportunities within my many interests.

The University of Tennessee and Tickle College of Engineering are spectacular! While I initially had no desire to stay within my home state for college, the warm and welcoming atmosphere of UTK drew me in. Throughout the college admissions process, I always knew that UTK personally cared about me and my success. This caring environment has only grown since arriving at UTK! My professors have always been willing to help and support me throughout my course work. I also love how the Tickle College of Engineering fosters a collaborative environment where you and your peers help push each other towards achievements. There is an amazing support system within this college to help all students achieve their future goals.

The Tickle College of Engineering also provides numerous opportunities for you to grow academically, socially, and globally. During my past two years, I have participated in a faculty guided study abroad program in Florence, Italy, completed a co-op term at a manufacturing plant in Georgia, and begun undergraduate research in machine learning and autonomous vehicles. Whether you’re wanting to study abroad, intern, co-op, or participate in undergraduate research, there are plenty of resources available to guide you towards these experiences.

This university also provides a surplus of ways to get involved! In addition to being a Women in Engineering Ambassador, I am involved in the Haslam Scholars Program, Cook Grand Challenge Honors Program, Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, and Society of Women Engineers where I served as the Logistics Chair for the main K-12 outreach event. These programs, clubs, and organizations have been a great way for me to expand my connections in college and form spectacular friendships. I highly recommend getting involved whether it’s within the Tickle College of Engineering, UTK campus, or Knoxville community!

Feel free to reach out to me through email if you have any questions about the Tickle College of Engineering or UTK in general! I can’t wait to see you on Rocky Top and Go Vols!!
