My name is Destiny McClaine, and I am a junior here at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a Pre-Medicine concentration. I was born and raised in THE Bluff City, Memphis, TN.
I chose engineering on a whim. I never thought in my entire 18 years before coming here that I would be an engineer. Like most of my peers, we loved and were proficient in math and science. I didn’t realize how good until I got into AP Calculus my senior year of high school. I was set on being a doctor, and my Calculus teacher convinced me that I could do both if I chose Biomedical Engineering. Best advice of my life because now I plan to pursue my MD/PhD post-undergrad.
Being a student at UT has taught me so much, mostly about myself. I found my passion for mentorship while being a tutor for math and chemistry for the Office of Multicultural Student Life. I discovered my love for dance by becoming a member and now choreographer for Strange Fruit Dance Company. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have each given me very diverse avenues to find my perfect niche at the University.
UT has definitely been a home away from home. Even though I am 391 miles away from my family, I’ve found a new one here on Rocky Top. Through several academic and professional resources, the Tickle College of Engineering is the PERFECT place for me to grow into a well-rounded and successful engineer.
I hope you decide to join the family and see you soon in Big Orange Country. Go Vols!
