Hey future Vols!
My name is Hanson Lam, and I am a senior double majoring in computer science and applied mathematics here at the University of Tennessee. I was born and raised here in Knoxville, so I was definitely a little hesitant in choosing UT for college. After all, I wanted to escape my parents and explore a new city! However, after attending a pre-college summer program here, I quickly realized how many opportunities UT had, and I knew that Rocky Top was a special place to call home.
One of the things that I love the most about UT is the opportunities that it has. I have always wanted to combine my interest in technology with business, which has led to my involvement in the Heath Integrated Business and Engineering program and a business fraternity. Additionally, on the social side, I am also involved with TEDxUTK, an organization devoted to hosting TEDx conferences on campus. Academically, I am also a part of Tau Beta Pi (our engineering honors society), and I am actively involved with undergraduate research. Regardless of your interests, there is certainly something here at UT for you!
This past summer, I had the opportunity to do an internship in Kansas City with Garmin, a technology company. I learned so much throughout the 12 weeks, including the opportunity to work on projects to develop map features for Garmin's automotive navigation infotainment systems. It was a neat experience to apply what I learned in the classroom to real industry work, and I'm grateful to UT for setting me up for success. The experience truly helped broaden my appreciation for the opportunities UT has!
