Hey guys, Welcome to Rocky Top!
My name is Libby Smoak and I am a senior in Nuclear Engineering with a minor in Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Management. I am from a small town outside of Charleston, SC. I fell in love with Knoxville as a little girl and my interest in clean energy sources led me to the University of Tennessee.
I am an out-of-state student, so I have found many ways to make UTK a home. I joined organizations like American Nuclear Society, Women in Nuclear, the Engage Living Learning Community, a local gym, and ambassador programs. I am a Tickle College of Engineering ambassador, but also an Engineering Professional Practice Ambassador. This is where I help current engineering students with resumes and interviews to get internships and co-ops. I also have a weekend job at Navitat Canopy Adventures, a local ropes course at IJAMs Nature Center. This has been a great experience meeting people and spending time outside.
I love how campus is just a short walk to downtown and a short drive to the Great Smoky Mountains. My friends and I always have something to do during the weekends here: including hiking, swimming, long drives around town and through the mountains, petting all of the dogs in Market Square, and going to premier night for any and all Marvel movies.
I have completed a Co-op with Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industry. I worked with networks and control systems in the Nuclear Propulsion Plants on the USS Gerald R. Ford and USS John F Kennedy. I was appointed project lead for my last two rotations setting up an area network on the ship coordinating with the Navy. During summer 2021, I completed an internship at UCOR working on liquid waste management for Oak Ridge National Lab.
Feel free to contact me about any questions you have!
I hope to see you around campus soon!!
