Hi, future Volunteer! My name is Sam Pankratz and I am a senior studying aerospace engineering here in the Tickle College of Engineering at UT. I grew up just down the street in Maryville, Tennessee, but a big part of my heart is now here on Rocky Top. I remember my engineering tour where I knew that much like my family, I too would become a UT student and carve out my own path as a member of the Volunteer Family.
Early on in life I knew I liked to be hands-on building and tinkering with things. As college became closer, my interests in math, science, and physics would couple with a love of aviation that could only be satisfied by pursuing aerospace engineering.
I have found so many opportunities on campus. I am involved in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) on campus, the Cook Grand Challenge Engineering Honors Program, Tau Beta Pi, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and senior design projects. I was also fortunate to take part in the Engineering in London study abroad program in the summer of 2019. Over the summer of 2020 I completed an internship working with unmanned aircraft which has further helped define the career path I want to take. These opportunities and the relationships they build have been incredible, and it is all because of UT.
I've also spent much of my time here conducting undergraduate research. As an undergraduate research assistant, I and many others have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to cutting edge technology with leading experts in their field. It is a fantastic way for students to learn about their field and develop specific interest areas. I'd love to discuss my work at the Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF) with you!
I'm thrilled you are considering UT! If you have any questions about UT, aerospace engineering, or anything else I've mentioned, please reach out! I would love to help you find your path here.
