Hey future Vols! I’m so glad that you’re interested in Tennessee Engineering!
My name is Zoe Antonas and I’m a junior at the University of Tennessee. I enjoyed chemistry in high school, so I chose to major in chemical engineering. The classes are not easy, but I enjoy the challenge and I love learning more about my future job.
In addition to a great, hands-on education, UT also provides endless opportunities to gain real engineering experience. I was able to earn a spot as a co-op student at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tennessee. Through this position, I work as an engineer alternating with semesters in school. My first rotation was spent as a research assistant in an industrial coatings development group. After that, I worked on improvement projects as a staff engineer in the Materials Handling department. I am currently back at school, and over the summer I will be working as a process engineer in the Advanced Controls group. This has allowed me to gain real, on-the-job experience as I finish school, and UT really supports these types of experiences for all engineering students!
When I am not doing homework, I participate in a few different organizations and activities at UT and around Knoxville. I'm involved in the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and that has been a great way to connect with other women who are also studying engineering. I'm a member of both the Chancellor’s Honors Program and the Engineering Honors Program, which both provide opportunities to take smaller classes and get involved in some interesting opportunities around the college. Each week, I volunteer at a local elementary school to help with after school support, and I love to run on the many beautiful greenways that run through campus and downtown Knoxville.
UT is a great school in a great city, and there’s something for everyone! With such a great engineering college, there’s no reason not to come and take a look around. Visiting a college is the best way to tell if a school is right for you, so schedule a tour of the engineering campus and come see why UT is the right choice for you. See you soon!
